Maternity Relief Project

Relieving Burdens and Supporting New Beginnings for Mothers and Their Babies in Ghana, West Africa

Background

In Ghana, the high cost of medical care remains a significant barrier to accessing essential health services. While the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has improved healthcare access since its implementation in 2008, it does not fully cover all maternal health expenses, such as medications, outstanding bills, and ultrasound services. As a result, many mothers are left with unpaid hospital bills, forcing some families into financial hardship or preventing them from seeking timely care.

Research has shown that out-of-pocket (OOP) costs during pregnancy average GH¢120 (US$8), with many families relying on savings or selling assets to cover these costs. Some are unable to afford necessary treatments, leading to complications and strained family dynamics. Addressing these financial challenges ensures equitable healthcare access and promotes community well-being.

Boame Helping Hands Foundation (BHHF) has launched the Maternity Relief Initiative to respond to this pressing need. This program is dedicated to alleviating the burden of unpaid hospital bills and providing essential supplies to mothers, their babies, and healthcare facilities in Ghana.

Our Commitment

Our Commitment •

Our Commitment

  • Medical Fund: Cover medical bills for mothers who have recently given birth, enabling them to leave the hospital without financial distress.

  • Supplies: Distribute essential items, including diapers, baby clothes, and hygiene products, to support newborns and their mothers.

  • Healthcare Tools: Provide PPE and medical equipment to hospitals and clinics to improve quality of care.

Why This Initiative Is Important

The impact of unpaid medical bills goes beyond the individual—entire families and communities feel the strain. Mothers who cannot pay their bills may be detained at hospitals, preventing them from returning home to care for their families. By addressing this issue, we aim to:

  • Foster healthier families and communities by reducing financial burdens.

  • Empower mothers with the support they need to recover and thrive post-delivery.

  • Strengthen healthcare systems in various communities by providing essential resources.
